HORSE’S MICROBIOTA
BENEFITS OF PROBIOTIC

The microbiota of any animal refers to the collection of micro-organisms, such as bacteria, viruses, protozoa, and yeast that reside on or in the body of that animal. These microbial inhabitants are not invaders but beneficial colonizers.

In the previous part of this blog series we looked at the numerous problems associated with an imbalance in the equine gut microbiota. Sudden changes in the delicate ecosystem that thrives in the horse gut may result in colic, laminitis, and even gastric ulcers.

DIARRHEA

Diarrhea is a condition defined as loose or excessive/ too-frequent defecation which occurs when the intestine fails to properly absorb electrolytes, protein, and water.

ABOUT PSSM

Muscular disorders represent a common cause of disability and of poor athletic performance in horses. Among them, polysaccharide storage myopathy (PSSM) is widely recognized as a cause of recurrent episodes of muscle disease.

IMMUNE SYSTEM

The horse’s immune system plays a critical role in tackling the infections that it encounters. It is instrumental in protecting the horse when foreign invaders, such as viruses, parasites, fungi, or bacteria, breach the physical barriers—such as skin and mucous membranes—and enter the body.
